Fast food giant Wendy’s has officially entered the Guyanese market, with its flagship location on Vlissengen Road in Georgetown set to open on Monday. Behind the launch is Iman Khan-Cummings, founder and franchisee of WenKai Inc., who has brought the globally recognised brand to Guyana through the Corum Group, the same company that introduced P.F. Chang’s to the country in 2024.
At the opening ceremony on Thursday, President Irfaan Ali praised Khan-Cummings for her confidence in the local economy and her role in job creation. The President also highlighted the significance of the venture being led and staffed by women.
“You’re not only creating employment but you’re empowering employees. I’m also pleased to see a full team of women. This is a woman-powered environment,” he stated.
Khan-Cummings expressed appreciation for the government’s pro-business climate, which she said has made it possible for WenKai Inc. to expand.
“This is the first of many locations. We’re going to continue to expand, and we’re grateful for a government that paves the way and fosters an environment where we can do so,” she said.

Wendy’s plans to launch three locations by the end of 2025, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with drive-through and delivery services. The flagship restaurant occupies the former KFC building on Vlissengen Road and promises to deliver Wendy’s signature offerings, including the popular #5 spicy chicken sandwich, in a modern and convenience-focused setting.
Fast food continues to thrive in urban centres around the world, driven by busy lifestyles and the demand for affordability. However, global health experts have raised concerns about overconsumption, linking it to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, particularly among low-income communities with limited access to healthy food options.
Despite these challenges, the Wendy’s launch represents a major step forward for Guyana’s growing hospitality and retail sectors, with WenKai Inc. emerging as a key player in shaping the country’s fast food landscape.
