Dear Editor,

I wish to register my strongest condemnation of the vile and distasteful comments made by Prime Minister Mark Phillips and Leomod Craig at the PPP/C rally in Bath, West Coast Berbice, on Sunday, August 10, 2025.

Venezuela/Guyana dispute over Essequibo

Particularly disturbing were the remarks by Mr. Craig, who holds no official position in the PPP/C, but who recently found political refuge within the party. His comments displayed blatant disrespect to women and sought to belittle and embarrass his African brothers and sisters. Such conduct is shameful, divisive, and unbecoming of anyone seeking to influence public opinion in a democratic society.

The leadership of the PPP/C will not rebuke these utterances; instead, one can only imagine them laughing behind closed doors, satisfied that such rhetoric distracts from their own failings. But this is precisely the brand of politics that poisons our national unity and corrodes the moral standards we should expect from those in public life.

The people of Guyana deserve better, leaders and political actors who lift the conversation, who respect women, who honour our diverse heritage, and who unite rather than divide. We must reject this gutter politics and hold to account those who use public platforms to demean, disrespect, and insult.

Yours truly,

Annette Ferguson
