The University of Guyana’s basketball team, the UG Trojans, is celebrating a major victory after winning the 2025 Tertiary Basketball League title with an impressive 86–55 win over defending champions, Linden Technical Institute (LTI), on Sunday, July 27.
The final match, held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, was the perfect finish to a flawless season. The Trojans, all under 21 years old, went unbeaten throughout the tournament, showing skill, unity, and determination in every game.
Though they started off a bit slow and trailed 14–11 at the end of the first quarter, the team picked up momentum in the second round. They moved the ball well, stepped up their defence, and began taking better shots. By halftime, UG had taken the lead at 31–24. From there, they stayed in control and pulled away to a dominant 31-point win.
Team captain Alafin Joseph delivered a standout performance that earned him the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. He racked up 31 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, helping to drive the team’s success from both ends of the court.
Supporting him was Peter Langevine, who grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 16 points, using his size and strength to control the game inside the paint.
University of Guyana’s Sports Organiser, Mr Osafa Dos Santos said: “We are excited about this victory, it means a lot to the team, and we are proud that we brought home the title for UG. Team captain and tournament MVP, Alafin Joseph, put in a stellar performance, racking up 31 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. He was everywhere on the court, driving to the basket, hitting long-range jumpers, and orchestrating the offense with poise. His leadership proved critical to the Trojans’ championship run”.
The Trojans’ journey to the title included a tough opening match against Linden Technical Institute (LTI), which they won 60–52, followed by a 71–35 blowout over the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI). The team received strong performances from players like Ronoko Vaughn, Chris Perez, Judah Ferreira, and Michael English throughout the season.
Guided by Coaches Warren Wilson and Akil Lewis, and supported by UG’s Sports Department, the Trojans trained consistently and played with passion. Coach Wilson praised the team’s discipline and growth, saying, “These young men showed what commitment, discipline, and belief can do. They didn’t just win, they played with heart, and they played for each other.”
The win is a proud moment for the University of Guyana and proof of the talent and potential within its student body. It also signals UG’s growing presence in sports and its commitment to excellence beyond the classroom.
