ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Known for his accuracy, work ethic, and quiet determination, Vanburn Holder was one of the dependable members of the West Indies pace bowling attack which took the cricketing world by storm during the inaugural ICC World Cup tournament.

Although the spotlight often shone on the more flamboyant stars of the squad, the disciplined Barbadian fast bowler played a key role when he got the opportunity to take the field, providing control and maintaining pressure from one end, while his counterparts wreaked havoc from the other end on opposing batsmen.

Sammy demands patience at the crease as West Indies prepare for Sri Lanka Test challenge

In a format that was still new to players and fans alike, his ability to stick to a tight line and length helped build pressure that led to breakthroughs at crucial moments.

Holder featured in the group stage match against Sri Lanka, where he bowled with typical economy and poise, demonstrating the depth of the West Indies’ pace arsenal. Even when not in the playing XI, his presence in the squad added strength and reliability, giving the team valuable options and balance.

In the dressing room, his experience and professionalism were key assets, helping to maintain the discipline and unity that were hallmarks of the West Indies’ campaign.

He was part of a foundation that helped launch West Indies cricket into a golden era—one built not only on brilliance, but also on the strength of dependable performers like him.

For his contribution, Holder will be among the legends honoured during the 8th annual Cricket West Indies and the West Indies Players’ Association awards gala, which takes place on Sunday, June 22 at the Wyndham Grand Barbados, with broadcast coverage beginning at 5:30 PM. Limited fan tickets are available for purchase at www.windiescricket.com.
