DPI – Brazil on Friday reaffirmed its support to Guyana on the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy case which is before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ernesto Araújo during a virtual briefing with Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd said Brazil does not recognise the Decree issued by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Minister Araújo said Brazil views the actions of the Venezuelan regime as troubling and called for a peaceful resolution of the controversy through the ICJ to ensure the peace of the Region is not jeopardized.

Meanwhile, Minister Todd, emphasised Guyana’s position of a peaceful resolution to the border controversy and conveyed President Irfaan Ali’s stance of relying on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a solution to the long-protracted situation.

The two Ministers took the opportunity to reiterate their commitment to cooperation on developmental areas recently discussed during the visit of Minister Araújo to Guyana in November 2020.
