As we mark the 59th anniversary of our beloved nation’s independence, I extend heartfelt greetings to all Guyanese, both at home and in the diaspora. This is a time to reflect on the journey of our people — our resilience, our sacrifices, and our unwavering hope for a better tomorrow.

Independence was earned through unity and struggle, not granted. It is a reminder that we must never take our freedoms for granted, nor allow any government to erode the democratic values that bind us together as one people, one nation, with one destiny.

Today, however, we must also speak truth to power. Under the PPP Government, we have witnessed a concerning erosion of transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in governance. The voices of many are silenced, and the benefits of development continue to be unevenly distributed. The struggles of the ordinary man and woman, the vendors, the youths, and the public servant remain ignored, while corruption and favouritism thrive.

But let us not despair. Let us remember that real independence lies not just in the raising of a flag, but in the dignity of every citizen, the accountability of those in power, and the unity of our diverse people.

Let us renew our commitment to justice, equity, and national pride. Let us demand better — because Guyana deserves better.

Happy Independence Day to all!

Former Staff Sgt.(GDF), Mayor
City of Georgetown
