Police investigating death of Brazilian miner

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is investigating the death of a 55-year-old Brazilian national called Piawi (only name given), a miner on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Sand Hill, Oku Backdam.

According to reports, the man died at about 19:00h. Piawi was employed at a mining operation for about six weeks but on Wednesday he complained of pain and swelling in his abdomen while laying in a hammock inside the camp.

Efforts were made to acquire transportation for him to receive medical attention but he became motionless while waiting.

The man’s body was subsequently transported to the Bartica Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival on Thursday at 14:10h.
