KINGSTON, Jamaica (WiredJA)– The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of former Namibian President and revolutionary leader Sam Nujoma, remembering him as a transformative figure in Africa’s struggle for liberation.
In a statement today, Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign and Regional Affairs, Dr. Angela Brown Burke, conveyed the party’s condolences to the people and Government of Namibia, recognizing Nujoma’s profound impact on his nation’s history and the broader African liberation movement.
“On behalf of the People’s National Party, I extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of former President Nujoma. His unwavering dedication to Namibia’s independence and the cause of African unity has left an enduring legacy. As Namibia’s first president, his vision and leadership not only shaped his nation but also inspired freedom movements across the continent,” said Dr. Brown Burke.
Nujoma played a pivotal role in Namibia’s struggle for independence from South African rule, founding the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) in 1960 and leading the fight for liberation. Forced into exile for nearly 30 years, he spearheaded Namibia’s independence movement before returning to lead the country’s first democratic elections in 1989. His leadership helped lay the foundation for a stable and democratic Namibia.
Beyond his political leadership, Nujoma was a steadfast advocate for gender equality, often recognizing the critical role of women in leadership and governance. His commitment to justice and empowerment resonated far beyond Namibia’s borders.
A Revolutionary Legacy
Sam Nujoma, widely revered as Namibia’s “founding father,” passed away on Saturday night at the age of 95 after a three-week hospitalization in Windhoek, according to the Namibian presidency. His death has shaken the nation, prompting the government to declare a period of national mourning.
Nujoma led Namibia out of apartheid South Africa’s rule in 1990 and served as its first president for 15 years. His leadership was instrumental in healing the deep divisions caused by the brutal independence war and South Africa’s policies of ethnic segregation.
He was among the last of a historic generation of African leaders who guided their nations out of colonial rule, standing alongside figures such as Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, and Samora Machel of Mozambique.
Though SWAPO has remained in power since independence, Nujoma stepped down from the presidency in 2005 and retired from active politics in 2007 at the age of 78. His influence, however, remained deeply woven into Namibia’s national identity.
“We honor his memory and celebrate his invaluable contributions to the fight for self-determination,” Dr. Brown Burke added. “May his legacy continue to inspire generations to work toward a more just and equitable world.”
