China firmly opposes the U.S. plan to restrict investment by American companies in China and reserves the right to take corresponding measures, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Monday.

The remarks followed a proposed rule by the U.S. Treasury Department on June 21 that would restrict U.S. investments in China.

In a statement, the spokesperson mentioned that the U.S. move will affect normal economic and trade cooperation between Chinese and American enterprises and undermine the international economic and trade order.

“The U.S. side should respect the laws of the market economy and the principle of fair competition, stop politicizing and weaponizing economic and trade issues, remove the restrictions on investments in China, and create an enabling environment for business cooperation between China and the U.S.,” the spokesperson said.
