By Mark DaCosta- In a significant move towards modernising the educational landscape, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has announced the introduction of a range of innovative Science and Technology programmes into the regional school system. These new offerings, aimed at equipping students with skills relevant to the evolving global economy, include subjects such as Entrepreneurship, Performing Arts, Physical Education and Sport, Tourism, Animation and Game Design, Logistics and Supply Chain Operations, Digital Media, and Financial Services, all at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level. These offerings, say the CXC, are part of the New Generation Science and Technology (NGST) curriculum.
The announcement was made by CXC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Wayne Wesley, during a news conference held on Tuesday. Dr Wesley highlighted that while some of these subjects are not yet in high demand, there is a collaborative effort between governments and CXC to foster interest and support for these programmes. “Governments will work with CXC to build demand for these new programmes, ensuring their viability. Today’s discussions with the Ministers of Education emphasised the necessity for a unified regional marketing approach to promote priority areas in STEM education and climate-smart agriculture, which are vital for the region’s economic growth and sustainable development,” Dr Wesley stated.
New Generation Science and Technology (NGST) refers to an educational framework designed to integrate modern scientific and technological advancements into the curriculum. This approach emphasises hands-on learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that are essential for tackling contemporary challenges. NGST aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and the rapidly changing demands of the global workforce, ensuring that students are well-prepared for future careers in innovative and emerging fields.
According to one teacher familiar with curriculum design, the inclusion of these new subjects in the CAPE curriculum is a forward-thinking initiative that aligns with global educational trends and the increasing importance of technology and innovation. As the world continues to advance technologically, there is a growing need for professionals who are well-versed in these new areas. By introducing courses in Animation and Game Design, Digital Media, and Logistics and Supply Chain Operations, our education system is taking a proactive step in preparing students for the digital economy, the teacher said.
The teacher said that, in the context of Guyana, these additions to the curriculum are particularly timely. Our nation is on the cusp of significant economic transformation, driven by developments in various sectors, including oil and gas, tourism, and agriculture. Equipping young people with skills in entrepreneurship and financial services will empower them to contribute meaningfully to the economy, fostering innovation and sustainable growth.
The teacher added that, the inclusion of subjects like Physical Education and Sport, Performing Arts, and Tourism reflects an understanding of the diverse opportunities available in these fields. These courses not only provide avenues for creative expression and physical well-being but also prepare students for careers in industries that are integral to our cultural and economic landscape.
