The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD) has condemned “in the strongest terms the disgusting and abhorrent treatment of Wanita Huburn, a respected female journalist and media personality.” We believe it is crucial for all Guyanese, irrespective of political allegiances, to unite and denounce such acts of abuse.
A statement by Vice Chairman Pt Ubraj Narine said “the recent mistreatment of Ms. Huburn on the PPP government’s Facebook page ‘Live in Guyana’, serves as a distressing reminder of the persisting issue of discrimination and abuse within our society.”
“It is disheartening to witness individuals targeted and victimized simply for expressing their opinions or criticizing those in positions of power. Freedom of speech and expression are fundamental pillars of any democracy, and they must be protected at all costs.
“Without the ability to express diverse opinions, criticize government actions, and engage in open debate, democracy cannot function effectively. When freedom of speech is restricted or suppressed, it can lead to a lack of transparency, accountability, and public participation in decision-making processes.
“In addressing this issue, it is crucial for governments to uphold and protect freedom of speech as enshrined in national laws and international human rights standards.
“This includes ensuring the independence of the media, safeguarding journalists’ rights to report without fear of censorship or reprisal, and promoting a culture of tolerance and pluralism where diverse viewpoints are respected and encouraged.
“Civil society organizations, human rights activists, and international institutions also play a vital role in advocating for freedom of speech and holding governments accountable for any violations.
“IFAAD reminds all Guyanese that our collective strength lies in embracing diversity, respecting alternative viewpoints, and fostering an environment that encourages open dialogue. We firmly believe that a healthy democracy relies on the active participation and engagement of citizens with varying perspectives, which ultimately paves the way for progress and development,” Narine said.
“We emphasize that holding individuals accountable for their actions should not be an avenue for further discrimination or abuse. Instead, we urge for responsible dialogue and the pursuit of justice through legal means. IFAAD encourages all Guyanese to reject the perpetuation of hostility and stand firm against any form of discriminatory behavior within our society,” Narine continued.
The Pandit cautioned that “ it is important to note that the issue at hand should not be framed solely within a political context. Discrimination and abuse are societal problems that transcend political boundaries and are prevalent across various sectors. The objective of our condemnation is to foster a more inclusive and harmonious society, where individuals are free from any form of mistreatment or prejudice.”
Pandit Narine has called upon “the Guyanese people and civil society organizations to join us in standing firmly against such reprehensible acts. It is crucial that we work together to create a society where everyone feels safe and empowered to express their opinions without fear of retribution or abuse.”
He said “IFAAD remains committed to fighting discrimination in all its forms and will actively work towards creating awareness, promoting dialogue, and advocating for policies that safeguard the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs.” (WiredJA)
