2024 APRIL OPEN CHESS TOURNAMENT

In exhilarating action the 2024 April Open Chess Tournament finished last evening at the Catholic Life Center on Brickdam with (FIDA MASTER) Anthony Drayton and the young Ricardo Narine emerging on top the Open category and in the Juniors category respectively. 

The total winners are –

CHESS ATTRACTS OVER 50 YOUNG PEOPLE IN LEGUAN

Open Category– 1st Anthony Drayton, 2nd Damian Moulder & 3rd Gilbert Williams. 

Juniors Category – 1st Ricarho Narine, 2nd Kishan Puran, 3rd Sachin Pitamber, 

4th Kyle Couchman & 5th Alexander Zhang 

Best Female overall– Aditi Joshi.

Best Newcomer overall– Tendi Cameron.     

 

The AprilOpen Chess Tournament is an annual rapid chess open competition held in the month of April. It was originally started as a birthday celebration of the founder Marlon Williams however over the last thirteen years the tournament has evolved to a popular and highly anticipated event that now stands on its own. The tournament now attracts many chess enthusiasts from all ages and genders, and persons from all walks of life. The tournament has maintained its position as an excellent platform for the promotion of the glorious game of chess here in our beloved home Guyana. This year we paid homage to our country’s struggles with its aggressive neighbor under the slogan (Guyana Map covered in nation colour) not a blade of grass!!!      

We would like to thank the Guyana Chess Federation for their unwavering support over the years. The sponsors – SAB Mining, Andrews Supermarket, Maggie’s, Fantasy Gaming Lounge, JGS filling Station, Victoria Law Chambers & Desigershouse are the ones that has made this tournament possible with their generous support .

 This year’s chief administrator Mr. Rashad Hussain. The game format – rapid chess; fifteen minutes; nine rounds Swiss tournament. The prizes up for grabs were: – 

Open category- 1st place (trophy &G$300k), 2nd place (trophy &G$100k), 3rd place (trophy &G$50k); 

Juniors category- 1st place (trophy &G$30k), 2nd place (trophy &G$15k), 3rd place (trophy &G$7k), 4th place (medal & G$3k), 5th place (medal & G$3k) 

Additionally prizes best female overall (medal & G$5k) and best newcomer overall (medal & G$5k). 

AprilOpen Chess Tournament- April 7th, 2024 starting at around 10:30 a.m.; the Catholic Life Center, Brickdam Cathedral, Georgetown.
