CGTN – Chinese Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang stressed at a UN Security Council meeting that the international fight against terrorism can only be strengthened, not weakened.

Geng said the current international situation is increasingly turbulent, with wars and conflicts breaking out one after another. The threat of terrorism, he noted, is resurgent and spreading, making the global counter-terrorism landscape ever more challenging.

Against this backdrop, he noted, the international fight against terrorism can only be strengthened, not weakened. The UN Security Council should continue to prioritize counter-terrorism, adhere to a “zero tolerance” approach toward terrorism, set aside geopolitical considerations and ideological prejudices, and oppose double standards and selective practices. The counter-terrorism sanctions regime should be adapted to the changing situation and the requirements of member states, further strengthening the sanctions network against terrorists, he added.

Geng emphasized that China has put forward the Global Security Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, calling on the international community to work together to tackle complex and severe security challenges and to jointly prevent and combat terrorism.

“China practices what it preaches,” Geng said, adding that the country has long assisted developing countries – particularly in Africa – in strengthening their counter-terrorism capacity building through both bilateral and multilateral channels.

China, he affirmed, will continue to work with all parties to combat terrorism in all its forms and contribute to a world of lasting peace and universal security.
