GEORGETOWN, GUYANA –Guyana’s electoral process has been plunged into a major crisis following the explosive discovery of national identification cards belonging to foreign nationals from Bangladesh within the Official List of Electors (OLE) were allegedly added outside of the registration window and were not a part of the 738k list of electors which was widely available in mid-year 2025, raising alarming questions about the integrity of the elections and the impartiality of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
The bombshell revelation centers on two specific ID cards issued to Bangladeshi nationals that were widely available on social media. According to official records, these IDs were **not** part of the original batch of 738,000 elector’s list produced during the statutory registration period. Astonishingly, these foreign IDs only appeared in the final voter list, which was released after July and now contains approximately 750,000 names.
This discrepancy has ignited a firestorm of accusations against the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP), which opposition groups have long accused of attempting to rig the electoral machinery. While many past claims have been difficult to verify, the presence of these specific, identifiable foreign IDs provides a tangible point of investigation.
The discovery forces several critical questions into the national spotlight that GECOM has so far failed to adequately address; How were these foreign nationals able to acquire Guyanese national ID cards completely outside of the legally mandated registration window? How were they then successfully registered to vote, a process that should be impossible to other citizens outside of the registration window? Who are the 20,000+ new electors added to the list? With only an estimated 13,000 legitimate first-time voters coming of age, the arithmetic behind the list’s growth from 738,000 to 750,000 remains completely unexplained. Why would foreign nationals even want to insert themselves into a hotly contested and controversial political process?
The gravity of the situation has prompted stark warnings from within Guyana’s legal community. A prominent legal professional, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the extreme sensitivity of the matter, issued a direct challenge to the elections body. GECOM must answer these questions if they wish this election to be credible,” the source stated. GECOM has become a black box and an arm of the PPP. It would do them well to remember that their employees risk imprisonment if they engage in fraudulent activities. The investigations will not end.”
This statement underscores the potential for serious legal consequences, including criminal prosecution, for election officials found to be complicit in any malfeasance.
The commission now faces immense pressure from opposition parties, civil society, and international observers to provide a full, transparent, and verifiable accounting of the entire voter list. Calls for an independent, forensic audit of the registration process are growing louder by the hour.
This is a developing story. We will continue to provide updates as GECOM responds and the situation unfolds.
