By Mark DaCosta- With less than two weeks remaining until the pivotal Elections 2025, citizens of our nation seeking to verify their registration details and polling stations are encountering significant disruptions. The online query system operated by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is reportedly down, leading to widespread concerns among voters regarding the integrity and reliability of the electoral process. The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has expressed deep apprehension over this issue, highlighting that the ability for voters to easily access essential information should be a cornerstone of a functioning democracy.

The online platform enables registered voters to confirm their details before elections, a crucial step to ensure transparency and bolstered voter confidence. However, users have been met with persistent error messages, indicating a failure of the system at a time when such access is vital. With mounting frustrations voiced by the public, the FGM has emphasised the gravity of the situation; it suggests that the breakdown of this essential service poses a significant challenge to the electorate and raises questions about GECOM’s ability to manage a smooth voting process.

The FGM’s statement underscores the implications of this failure. They assert, “If GECOM cannot even maintain its online query platform, how can the public have confidence in its capacity to deliver free, fair, and credible elections?” This sentiment echoes a larger fear among citizens that electoral oversight may not be up to par as the election date draws closer. The movement has reiterated that voter trust and electoral transparency are paramount, asserting that such principles “cannot be optional – they are the foundation of our democracy.”

Citizens have been growing increasingly frustrated with GECOM, citing issues that have persisted for weeks, culminating in this most recent system failure. As the election approaches, the need for a dependable and functional online platform has never been more pressing. Voter access to accurate information not only facilitates informed decision-making but also builds public confidence in the electoral system. The movement insists that GECOM’s inability to address these operational challenges reflects poorly on its readiness to conduct elections effectively.

With electoral season underway, the matter of present accountability has become a focal point in conversations surrounding the upcoming elections. The Forward Guyana Movement emphasises their commitment to bring these issues to the forefront of public discourse, hoping to galvanise support for a more trusting and transparent electoral process.

As our nation prepares for the crucial Elections 2025, it is vital that every citizen can easily access the information required to participate fully in the democratic process. The current state of the online query system serves as a stark reminder of the challenges we face as we strive for a fair and secure electoral environment. The existence of such a significant technical failure merely a stone’s throw away from polling day raises serious questions about the integrity of the upcoming elections and the capacity of GECOM to maintain the faith of the electorate. As such, the concerns raised by the Forward Guyana Movement are not just timely, but essential in the defence of our democracy.
