Guyana’s former Leader of the Opposition and Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, has labeled a “News Room” social media page as “a dirty campaign aimed at confusion.” This came after a photo of Joseph Harmon and President Irfaan Ali was posted with the caption: “Joseph Harmon endorses President Ali for a 2nd Term.”
Harmon said that posting a false article implying he has endorsed President Irfaan Ali and the PPP is reckless and dangerous in a country teeming with betrayal, corruption, and lawlessness.
Harmon, an attorney-at-law, has demanded that the News Room article be removed. The article included a photo of Harmon and Ali at the funeral of former PNC General Secretary Amna Ally, an act Harmon calls “disgusting false journalism” and insists must be taken down.
The photograph has since been removed and updated with an explanation by News Room stating: “The intent was not to convey an endorsement, but we understand and acknowledge the perception it created.” Despite this, screenshots of the post continue to circulate across social media, some labeled with “FAKE NEWS” and others without.
This is the second recent attempt to label the former Opposition Leader as endorsing the PPP Government. The previous incident involved a claim of endorsement after he attended a cricket match at the Providence Stadium.
