UG set to graduate close to 3500 in largest graduation ever

The University of Guyana is set to graduate close to three thousand five hundred graduands, the largest in the sixty-year history of the University. As Guyana’s state

University, which turned 60 on October 2nd, 2023  preparations are in high gear as the premier tertiary educational institution, hosts its 57th Convocation Ceremonies from November 9 to 11 2023 for the Turkeyen Campus and November 18, 2023, for the Berbice Campus.

Six ceremonies, two each day, for graduands of the Turkeyen Campus will be held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) in Georgetown from Thursday, November 9th to Saturday, November 11th. The ceremony for the UGBC graduands will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 15:00 hrs (3:00 P.M.) on the University Lawns, Berbice Campus, Tain Settlement.

Turkeyen Ceremonies for the different faculties will be held as follow:

The ceremonies will be blended with the large majority of the graduands attending face-to-face and the remaining participating virtually. 

This year will see several new academic programmes producing graduates for the first time, these include; Bachelor of Science (Food Science) in the Faculty of Natural Sciences; from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering; from the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Masters in Communication; from the Faculty of Education and Humanities,  Master of Education in Early Childhood Development; and the Institute for Human Resilience, Strategic Security, and The Future, the Masters in Strategic Development which has already won the 2023 Perry US Centre Award for Excellence in Security Studies.

The University will also confer several Honorary Doctoral Degrees during these special 60th anniversary ceremonies which will also include the Chancellor’s Ball for graduands and special invitees on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, (18:30 hrs.) for the Turkeyen graduands and on Thursday, November 16, 2023, (19:00 hrs.) in Berbice for the Berbice graduands.

This year Convocation Ceremonies are extremely special as the University is proudly celebrating its sixtieth anniversary under the theme “Consistently We Rise, Changing the World in Infinite Ways”.  The University’s role and place as a major development partner and its achievements are highly recognised and honoured locally, regionally and internationally. The University of Guyana has produced upwards of 50,000 graduates in its 60-year existence – many of whom have gone on to serve at the highest levels in both the private and public sectors nationally and internationally. 

The public is invited to celebrate with the University of Guyana at this year’s very special 60th anniversary graduation events which will be streamed live on the University’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/uniofguyana and UG Broadcasting Service at https://broadcasting.uog.edu.gy/. The Ceremonies will also be covered by local and international media.
