Linden Town Week Left Without Government Support Despite ‘One Guyana’ Promise

Linden Town Week, one of Guyana’s most highly anticipated cultural and historical celebrations, is just five days away. With thousands of residents in Linden and visitors from around the world preparing for the event, Her Worship Waneka Arrindell, JP, Mayor of Linden, issued a press statement thanking the many local, national, and international businesses for their support.

However, Mayor Arrindell also expressed concern over the lack of response from the Office of the President, Prime Minister, and government agencies such as the Ministries of Culture, Youth and Sport, Business, Tourism, Local Government and Regional Development, Education, Home Affairs, and Labor. Despite letters being sent since February, these agencies have not provided the necessary support and preparations for this significant social and tourism event.

Mayor Arrindell stated that this is the first time in the 26-year history of Linden Town Week that such a lack of support has been encountered. The ‘One Guyana’ concept seemingly does not extend to Linden, and despite numerous emails, phone calls, and text messages, the organizers have not received any response.

Mayor Arrindell posed a question to President Ali, asking if Linden is truly a part of the ‘One Guyana’ that his administration touts, and if so, why isn’t the same support given to other parts of Guyana provided to Linden? Despite the absence of support from elected officials, Mayor Arrindell assured that Linden will proudly showcase itself to the world during this event as a part of Guyana.
