Cook drowns in Puruni River

Police are investigating the suspected drowning of a 59-year-old miner from Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara (EBD) in the Puruni River who was found in a decomposed state.

Dead is Franklin Smith who was employed as a cook by a miner of Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast.

According to reports, on February 10, 2021, the man was left by three other workers in the camp preparing lunch. They went to the work ground which is located about three minutes away from the camp.

About 17:30 hours, the three workers returned to camp but did not see the deceased. A search was subsequently conducted in the area but the man was not found.

On February 14, 2021, about 16:00 hours the man’s body was found floating in the Puruni River. The matter was reported to Police who retrieved the body in an advanced state of decomposition. An investigation is in progress.
