By Mark DaCosta- A devastating event occurred in Triumph, East Coast Demerara, where a swarm of bees launched a sudden and violent attack on a team of road workers, resulting in the tragic death of one contractor and leaving another in critical condition. This incident highlights pressing issues concerning workplace safety and environmental management in our nation.

On Wednesday, an alarming situation unfolded on Surat Drive as a group of workers, engaged in road construction, found themselves under siege by a swarm of bees. Winston Semple, a 29-year-old contractor hailing from Prince William Street, Plaisance, suffered fatal injuries as a result of numerous stings and was declared dead upon his arrival at the Enmore Regional Hospital. His colleague, Glendon Simpson, a 40-year-old from Non Pariel, was also severely injured and remains hospitalised in critical condition.

Dead: Winston Semple

Witnesses reported that the attack occurred unexpectedly and without warning. The construction crew, engrossed in their work, were caught off guard when the bees descended upon them. In a frantic effort to escape, the men scattered in every direction, but both Semple and Simpson sustained multiple stings that led to their collapse.

Local residents were quick to respond, providing crucial assistance by transporting the injured workers to the hospital. One community member noted, “Public-spirited residents rushed to their aid and transported them to the Enmore Regional Hospital.” Tragically, Semple’s injuries were too severe, and he did not survive.

While the specifics of the incident are still being investigated, the Ministry of Labour has been urged to conduct a thorough review of safety protocols and measures to ensure the well-being of workers in high-risk environments. The shocking nature of this event has sparked discussions across the nation, raising awareness of the potential dangers lurking in various occupational settings, including unforeseen environmental threats like this incident.

As we mourn the loss of Semple, there are also calls for greater community awareness regarding bee behaviour and the proper precautions that should be taken in areas known for bee activity. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable elements that workers face while on the job. Not only does it underscore the need for improved safety measures, but it also reveals the harsh realities faced by those in the construction industry.

The unfortunate passing of Winston Semple is a tragedy that has resonated deeply in the community, where he was respected as a diligent worker. The impact of his loss is compounded by the ongoing plight of his colleague, Glendon Simpson, who continues to fight for his life in the hospital.

As investigations proceed, the community is left questioning the adequacy of oversight and safety protocols in place under current governance. The alarming reality of this incident raises critical issues regarding the level of protection afforded to workers in our nation, particularly as they face not only the risks inherent in their jobs but also the threats posed by the environment itself.
