By Mark DaCosta- In the bustling neighborhood of Kitty in Guyana, amidst the vibrant colours and sounds of a thriving community, there exists a somber reality — one that often goes unnoticed. Here, a 20-year-old boy grapples with the harsh challenges of life on the streets, caught in the clutches of poverty and addiction.

As I observed this young man navigating the streets, a tapestry of contradictions unfolded before me. On one hand, Kitty stands as a testament to Guyana’s growing economy, with its businesses, markets, and lively atmosphere. Yet, paradoxically, it also harbours the unseen struggles of individuals like him who remain on the fringes of society.

This young man, whom I’ve encountered during my visits to Kitty, has become a familiar face. He, along with a pack of loyal dogs, often frequents the vicinity of an Islamic organisation that provides sustenance to those in need. It’s a poignant scene — the juxtaposition of human despair and compassion from the charitable group, surrounded by the loyal canine companions.

The Islamic organisation’s efforts to feed not only the destitute but also the animals speak volumes about the community’s commitment to compassion. This communal act of kindness sheds light on the complexity of the issue: a shared struggle that extends beyond just the human experience.

However, beneath the surface of this compassionate gesture lies a stark reality — the young man’s battle with substance abuse. It’s a painful reminder that even in the midst of prosperity, some individuals fall through the cracks, grappling with personal demons that keep them ensnared in a cycle of poverty and addiction.

In my attempts to make a difference, I’ve provided him with clothing, a small act of compassion in the face of overwhelming adversity. Yet, it raises a critical question: How can a society witnessing economic growth allow its youth to languish on the streets, battling addiction and deprivation?

This poignant narrative highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address the multifaceted challenges faced by individuals like this young man. Beyond the immediate relief provided by charitable organisations, there is a pressing need for community-based programs that offer rehabilitation and support for those struggling with addiction.

Moreover, it underscores the importance of social awareness and responsibility. In a booming economy, where the gap between affluence and poverty can be stark, it becomes imperative for society to reflect on its collective conscience. The shadows in which this young man resides should serve as a collective call to action, prompting us to reevaluate the inclusivity and efficacy of our social support systems.

Guyana’s economic success should not cast shadows on the marginalised; instead, it should illuminate the path towards a more equitable and compassionate society. Initiatives aimed at integrating individuals like the 20-year-old boy into the mainstream, providing education, vocational training, and mental health support, can pave the way for lasting change.

The story of this young man in Kitty, Guyana, serves as a poignant reminder that prosperity should be measured not only by economic indicators but also by the well-being of every member of society. It beckons us to recognise our shared responsibility in fostering an environment where no one is left behind, where the glow of economic growth permeates every corner, dispelling the shadows of despair that linger in the midst of prosperity.
