In a letter to the editor, a teacher from Region 4 has expressed her frustration over the recent implementation of mandatory math classes on Saturdays. The teacher, who identified herself in the letter as Renata Douglas, argues that the new initiative is unfair to teachers who are already going above and beyond for their students, often at the expense of their own families.
According to Douglas, many teachers in Region 4 are already struggling to make ends meet, purchasing chalk, stationery, and other supplies for their classrooms out of their own pockets. The added burden of teaching on Saturdays, she says, is putting even more strain on an already overworked and under-appreciated profession.
Furthermore, Douglas points out that while many other government employees receive overtime pay for working on weekends, teachers are not given the same consideration. This, she argues, is an example of the larger issue of teachers being taken for granted and not given the respect and compensation they deserve.
In her letter, Douglas pleads with the Minister of Education to rethink the new initiative, pointing out that certain regions of the country are already experiencing a shortage of teachers and that this new rule will only serve to drive more teachers away from the profession. She also asks for fairness in the way teachers are treated and compensated for their time and expertise.
According to another grade 6 teacher who asked to remain anonymous, “the mandatory math classes on Saturdays is causing a lot of frustration among teachers and it is important for the Ministry of Education to take into account the concerns raised by the educators and come up with a solution that is fair to both the teachers and the students.”
