North West man shot dead while defending self from intruder

A North West District man was shot dead at the Apaiqua Landing, Middle Mazaruni River while trying to defend himself against an intruder.
Dead is 30-year-old Shane Blake, a miner of Hymakabra, Moruca Village, North West District. The Guyana Police Force, in a statement on Wednesday, said Blake was shot and killed on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at around 5:20hrs.

According to the police, the victim was asleep in an abandoned building on Apaiqua Landing when he was awakened by the suspect, who was armed with a handgun. The suspect reportedly ordered Blake to put on his clothes.

“Upon being told so, the victim armed himself with a cutlass and dealt the suspect a chop to his shoulder. The suspect retaliated by firing a shot in the victim’s direction, which struck him in the upper left chest area,” the police detailed.

The suspect subsequently fled the scene. The victim was escorted by public-spirited citizens to the Isseneru Health Post where he succumbed to his injury.

The body was escorted to the Bartica Hospital, where a post mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Police have so far obtained the suspect’s whereabouts and are making efforts to arrest.

Investigation ongoing.
