…Hoppie notes 6.8 percent decrease in serious crimes

To mark the new year, Commissioner of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) (ag), Nigel Hoppie has announced the promotion of over 290 members of the Force to higher rank.

In a Special Order issued on Thursday, 86 members of the Force were promoted to Sergeant; 116 were promoted to corporal; 41 were promoted to Lance Corporal; 10 were promoted to Special Sergeant; 23 to Special Corporal; 19 to Special Lance Corporal and one to Rural Constable.

In his message, the Commissioner said that the year 2020 was a difficult one, made more challenging by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and allegations laid against members of Law Enforcement of robbery, manslaughter, assault and corruption.

However, he noted that the year was not without its successes such as a 6.8 percent decrease in serious crimes; competent work of the Force during the General and Regional Elections; and the Force’s provision of security assistance as part of the Joint Services to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“Indeed, the issues that arose were all of grave concern which caused us to focus on the modus operandi and standard operational procedures we have in place. We have modified some SOPs and have created new ones where necessary, and we are also in the process of updating our Standing Orders. Suffice it to say that we are ready to face whatever challenges confront us in 2021, as we consolidate on the gains of 2020,” the Police Commissioner stated.

As part of its plans for 2021, the GPF will work to build public trust and to foster greater community involvement with special emphasis on youths. Hoppie thanked the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) for its support throughout the year, especially during the periods of protests on the West Coast of Berbice following the brutal murders of three teenagers. The Police Commissioner assured that the matters are still under “active investigation”.

He also thanked Community Policing Groups for their assistance and congratulated the members of the Force who were promoted.

“To those who have not been promoted I urge that you be patient and murmur not, one day you will reap your just reward. Once again may the richest blessings of God be showered upon your families and you, and may the year 2021 usher in greater good for you,” he said.
