The Guyana National Road Safety Council will today launch its “Road Safety & You” Television programme 2020 aimed at reducing the number of road accidents and fatalities that have occurred thus far for the year.
“Road crashes have claimed more lives than the epidemic COVID -19 in Guyana. Our latest road accidents and reported deaths are outrageous,” the Council said while highlighting statistics released by the Guyana Police Force.
According to the police statistics, there were 103 accidents this year as opposed to 70 accidents last year and 112 deaths this year while there were 74 deaths in 2019.
It has also been reported that four children have lost their lives in 2020 as compared to seven in 2019.
The Road Safety Council said the objective of its campaign is to raise awareness of road laws, to share road safety tips and guidance through a series of videos, interviews and discussions with a wide cross section of persons including road users.
