A three-year-old boy drowned on Tuesday in a pond in the yard of his parents at Baramita, North West District, police confirmed.
Dead is Keyon Joseph Antonio. Police in a statement said the child was residing with his parents, Suzie Antonio and Keith Fredericks and other siblings at Lot 1 Barama Line Baramita, North West District.
Enquiries revealed that there is a pond measuring about 8×12 width and length and 20 feet in depth respectively and about 30 meters away from the deceased’s home not in clear view. On Tuesday, according to the police report about 16:00 hours Swain Antonio the brother of the deceased told his mother that he was going to the shop to collect his cellphone that he had left to charge. The toddler and his other brother, Samuel Antonio followed their brother unbeknownst to him. Police said that the mother of the deceased claimed that she was sitting under a mango tree with her one-year-old baby when she heard Samuel screamed three times and she immediately got up and ran to the pond where Samuel was pointing into the water, crying and saying, “mama Keykey”
Police said the woman then ran over to the shop to call Swain who immediately left and jumped into the pond and pulled out Keyon in a motionless state. Ranks at Baramita Police Station were contacted and upon arrival they observed the child lying on his back dressed next to the pond. He was picked up and escorted to the Baramita Health Centre where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
The body was examined by the police but no marks of violence were seen on it. The body is presently being escorted to Port Kaituma Public Hospital mortuary for postmortem. Investigations are ongoing, the police release stated.
